To be honest, after books 31 and 30 I was starting to get a little tired of the series. Book 30 was slow, pointless, and the ending stripped any meaning from the plot. Book 31 was a hodge podge of stories and did not match the quality of previous anthologies in the series.
Deathfire was a welcome up tick in quality for me. It is a heroic space fantasy of pain and sacrifice. The character’s actions have consequence and push the plot of the series forward.
Nick Kyme is an author I’ve grown to appreciate more as time has gone on. He’s not quite on the level of the top authors at the Black Library (Dan Abnett, Aaron Dembski Bowden), but he writes enjoyable fiction that makes sense.
My one complaint with this book is there was a bit of a wasted opportunity at the end. The dinosaur attack on the Death Guard Legion was lame. It was just a bit too much. I also thought the final duel ended too abruptly. I don’t want to spoil the story – but let’s just say “He caught him monologuing”
If you are a fan of the Salamanders legion – you will like this novel. It is the next part in the story of Vulkan and resolves some of the plot threads from earlier volumes in the series.
I would score this book generously as an 8/10.
