Buckeye Battles Recap

This is a novel – so readers beware!

This past weekend, I played in a tournament called Buckeye Battles. It is the largest tournament in Ohio and just a super awesome event. Comp is very minimal and really sets the standard for the whole area. 2400 points, no units > 500 points sans characters, no units >80 models. Hills block los to all but large targets. Buildings block los to large targets.

I was able to win “Best High Elf Player at Buckeye Battles” – a picture of my awesome trophy can be found here.

Anyway, while I’m very proud of what I was able to accomplish, I came away kicking myself a little bit as the two games I lost would have ended up being solid victories if I simply tweaked my list in a few important ways. Both of these games came down to the same problem with the list and might have cost me the whole bloody affair.

Buckeye Battles highly emphasizes sportsmanship and divides armies into bands on day 1 based upon the strength of the list. Day 2 matches are based soley upon battle points.

This is the 2nd time I’ve played in Buckeye Battles. Last year I took a Coven of Light and did very well until my archmage was sucked into the warp during turn 1 of game 5. I got massacred and dropped waaaay down in standing.

I went into the tournament placed in band 2. I took a list that was “tough”, but not “filthy or beardy” so to speak. I did this for several reasons, chief among them feeling like it would be poorly received to bring an extremely difficult list.

In retrospect, based upon how the games turned out, I now feel like I should have just brought what I wanted to bring and take no prisoners, because if you play well – you will end up facing band 1 armies anyway – and at a disadvantage.

Anyway, enough navel gazing. I’m going to share the list I played, the lists I faced, and the scenarios we played, and then look at the list I’m going to play in the future – a 2400 version and a 2500 version.

This was the list I played.

Game 1 – Empire – Hidden Deployment

My opponent played this list.

Grandmaster: Great Weapon, Dragonhelm, Talisman of Preservation, Crown of Command
Wizard Lord: Lore of Light, Level 4, Dispel Scroll, Ring of Volans
Captain: BSB, Barded Warhorse, Full Plate, Shield, Sword of Might, Dawnstone
Warrior Priest: Barded Warhorse, Heavy Armour, Enchanted Shield, Obsidian Lodestone
Warrior Priest: Great Weapon, Armor of Meteoric Iron
Halberdiers x 39, Full Command
10 Archers, Musician
13 Inner Circle Knights: FC, Lances and shields, Steel Standard
4 Demigryph Knights: Musician, Standard, Lances and Shields, Banner of Eternal Flame
Great Cannon
Steam Tank
Luminark of Hysh

I lost this game. The short version of why is that I was not smart enough to have the crown of command in my dragon prince unit. Basically, I tried to bait his cav star with my cav star. He needed to roll an 11 to complete the charge and rolled a twelve. I should probably have never taken this sort of gamble in the first place, but being unable to stick a re-rollable 9 (rolled a 10….) and then an 8 in the following turn, just settled the issue.

Game 2 – Night Goblins – This One Time at Base Camp – This opponent was a great guy. He was fun to talk to and gave me a moon pie too!

This was his list:

Goblin Lord: Light Armour, Basha’s Axe, Enchanted Shield, Talisman of Preservation
Goblin BSB: Light Armour, Shield, Bad Moon Banner
Night Goblin Shaman: Sivejir’s Hex Scroll, Level 1
Night Goblin Shaman: Trickster’s Shard, Level 1
Night Goblin Shaman: Ruby Ring of Ruin, Dispel Scroll, Level 1
Night Goblin Archers x 20: Full Command, 3 Fanatics
Night Goblin Archers x 20: Full Command, 3 Fanatics
Night Goblins x 44: Full Command, 3 Fanatics
Night Goblins x 40: Full Command, 3 Fanatics
Night Goblins x 40: Full Command, 3 Fanatics
Giant
Giant
Trolls x 6
Mangler Squig
2 Spear Chukkas

I was able to table this opponent in turn 4. Basically, I used my Vanguard moves to position my reavers to pop fanatics while keeping terrain between them and the enemy. I also took a gamble and sent my frost bird with flesh to stone on him (T 10) to pop fanatics out of the last two units. Once this was accomplished, I just stayed patient, maneuvered, and then charged engaged in T3 and 4. When the smoke cleared, the only unit I lost was my fire bird who miraculously fell victim to the spear chukkas. I also maxed out on the mission bonuses.

Game 3 – Warriors of Chaos – Attack! Defend! When will it End?

This is the list i faced:

Daemon Prince: Level 4 Wizard, Mark of Nurgle, Chaos Armour, Bloated with Disease, Daemonic Flight, Sword of Striking, Charmed Shield, Chaos Familiar, Scaled Skin, Soul Feeder
Exalted Hero: BSB, Mark of Khorne, Berserk Rage, Barded Horse, Chaos Armour, Shield, Talisman of Preservation
Chaos Warriors x 20: Mark of Khorne, FUll Command, Hand Weapon, Shield
Chaos Warriors x 20: Mark of Nurgle, Full Command, Hand Weapon, Shield
Chaos Warriors x 20: Unmarked, Full Command, Hand Weapon, Shield
Chaos Knights x 6: Mark of Khorne, Full Comand, Ensorcerelled Weapons
Chaos Giant
Chaos Spawn

I tabled this opponent as well. Basically, I was able to bait his daemon prince into a charge during turn 1. He fell for it and after he slaughtered my unit of reavers was all set up for the Dragon Princes. My knights charged him during my turn 1 (went 2nd) and destroyed him. I overran and got into his chaos knights and destroyed them during his turn 2. After that I was able to use my reavers and frost bird to block and hold up the other blocks and I eliminated them one by one with my knights. I maxed on the mission bonuses as well.

Game 4 – Dark Elves – Bloody Woody Haze

This is the list I faced:

Sorceress on Pegasus: Level 4, Death Magic, Pendant, Focus Familiar, Black Dragon Egg
Hag Queen: BSB, Banner of Hag Graef
Warriors x 25: Full Command, Spears/Shields
Corsairs x 24: Full Command, Sea Serpent Standard, (unit had two handweapons)
Dark Riders x 5: Musician, Crossbows & Spears
Dark Riders x 5: Musician, Crossbows & Spears
Hydra
Shades x 5: Repeater Crossbows, 1 Assassin- Manbane, Rending Stars
Shades x 5: Repeater Crossbows, 1 Assasin – Manbane, Rending Stars
Cold One Knights x 5: Full Command
Cold One Knights x 5: Musician

I also tabled this opponent and scored an additional 3 for the bonus objectives. I deployed extremely well in this game and also got first turn. I used my shooting to eliminate the dark riders and shot one unit of shades off the board in turn 1. The other unit spent the rest of the game being shot by my archers and reavers. My chariot attempted to wipe them out, but did jack with impact hits and got eaten by the assassin. I used dwellers to eliminate the bsb. I also got the sorceress to flee off the table by charging with the phoenix – she fled – I then was able to chain charge her with reavers and push her off. In turn 3, I finally committed the knights to charging – it was all over in turn 4 as my opponent conceded. He had a tough time with dice and I made some smart moves.

Game 5 – Warriors of Chaos – The Messenger

This is the list I faced:

Daemon Prince: Mark of Slaanesh, Level 4 Wizard, Lore of Slaanesh, Chaos Armour, Daemonic Flight, Charmed Shield, Dragonbane Gem, Soul Feeder, Scaled Skin, Chaos Familiar, Flaming Breath
Exalted Hero of Tzeentch: Talisman of Preservation, Third Eye of Tzeentch, Ironcurse Icon, Barded Steed
Chaos Sorceror of Tzeentch, Lore of Metal, Level 2, Enchanted Shield, Channeling Staff, Hideous Visage
Warriors of Chaos x 17: Tzeentch, Banner of Swiftness, Sword and Board
10 Marauders Horsemen of Slaanesh, Flails, Standard, Musician
Chaos Chariot of Khorne
5 Hounds
5 Hounds
Chimera: Flaming Breath, Regeneration
5 Chaos Knights of Tzeentch, Musician, Standard, Lichebone Standard, Ensorcelled Weapons
Hellcannon

This game really got to me. For whatever reason, my opponent and I just did not click. Things got contentious. This game also came down to not having the damn crown of command. I maneuvered like a champ and got my messenger ( who was never in any unit) off the table and assasinated his messenger. During turn 6, my knights broke and were ran down. This game was on table 3, If my knights would not have broken, I would have won and scored something like 17 – 8. This would have put me in 2nd or third for the tournament solely on battle points.

Of course had I had the crown during game 1 – I might have won the whole damn thing.

Conclusions

1. The skycutter is a piece of junk. I knew it going in, but the tournament sealed the deal on this guy. It accomplishes little to nothing and with how I roll dice – charges, rolls a 1 for impact hits, fails to wound, fluffs everything else, then dies. It has survived 1 game in the last 8 I’ve played.

2. I am never – ever- not having the crown of command with my Dragon Prince bus. I left it behind purely based upon wanting to not “max the list out” and I paid for it severely.

3. The firebird just doesn’t cut it. I love the model, I keep telling myself, he’s useful, but this bird just get’s his butt kicked around when he actually gets in combat. The other stuff is cool, but another frost bird is just better.

Future Lists

I was considering going toward a Silver Helm Core paired with White Lions, but my heart is with my Dragon Princes.

I am going to make the following changes:

At 2400 points:
1. Wizard drops Ring of Khaine, adds Crown of Command
2. No Skycutter
3. Add 1 Bolt Thrower
4. Replace the Fire Bird with a 2nd Frostheart
